What Is a UPC and How Does Number Porting (MNP) Work?

Last updated: By Noushad, Kerala Fancy Number

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) lets a mobile number move from one operator to another. The Unique Porting Code (UPC) is the code that authorises that move. When you buy a VIP number, the UPC is what lets you take that number to your chosen network.

What a UPC is

A UPC is a short code generated for a specific mobile number that confirms a port request is genuine. It is valid for a limited time, so it should be used reasonably soon after you receive it.

How porting works step by step

  1. The UPC is generated for the number.
  2. You visit an authorised store of the network you want, with the UPC and your original Aadhaar.
  3. The store completes your KYC, including a live photograph, and submits the port request.
  4. The number becomes active on the new network once the request is processed.

How this applies to buying a VIP number

With Kerala Fancy Number, where porting is required you receive the UPC within 2–24 hours after payment. Receiving the UPC is separate from activation: the activation time starts after you complete KYC and submit the request.

Jio Prepaid numbers activate instantly after KYC and the request. Other networks take 3–5 working days, and BSNL takes 7 working days.

Keep your UPC safe

Share the UPC only with the authorised operator store. Never share an OTP with anyone.
